Update 3 from above, it has been a while coming, but the Update2 above was solved a while back, it was caused by a Dell PC that had its original wireless drivers installed, it was always bringing the wireless part of the router down, maybe by continuously requesting 'a' connections rather than 'b/g' ones. I solved the problem by updating all the network device drivers and preventing it from requesting 'a' connections. It has been stable for several months now, although still not perfect, but only for that Dell PC, everything else is fine.

Both routers are using Upnp to allow applications or devices that need to either discover the router or ask for port forwarding or mapping. the Netgear works with the Qnap server no problems but does not work with my Windows applications, The Linksys has worked with everything that uses Upnp including Utorrent :
<<
Welcome to the µTorrent Port Checker.
A test will be performed on your computer to check if the specified port is opened.

Checking port 31173 on xxx.ttt.yyy.zzz...

OK! Port 31173 is open and accepting connections.

You will be able to receive incoming BitTorrent connections.
>>
I was never able to get the Netgear to work, so I only ever had 'low id's and poor transfer rates since I could not connect to many seeds/peers.
